Unicaf University Graduate Conference 2023

This 2023 Unicaf University Graduate Conference included 33 oral presentations and 10 posters presented in English and in French, by doctoral students and candidates from more than 18 countries and 13 different doctoral pathways.

More than 500 delegates attended the conference over the course of 5 days, which also included four plenary sessions and two workshops.

The first plenary session featured a presentation by Dr Lameck Mwewa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Unicaf University in Zambia. Dr Mwewa’s presentation centred on the topic of ‘Biofuels and food security: sustainability opportunities and challenges in the SADC region.’

The second plenary presentation was by Dr Lupiya Daniel Mpolomoka, the Dean of the School of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Unicaf University Zambia, addressed the audience with his plenary presentation on ‘Trade in HEIs: interrogating policy and practice trends in southern Africa.’

Dr Christos Peristianis, the Dean of the Federal School of Education, Humanities, and Social Sciences delivered the third plenary presentation, ‘On the persistence of a Cypriot ‘horkatosini’: reflections on cultural backwardness and the mundane practice of driving to work,’ which provided insights into a remarkably prevalent cultural and societal phenomenon in Cyprus.

The concluding plenary presentation of the conference was conducted in French and was delivered by Dr Abdelkarim Naitdouch, a faculty member at Unicaf University. His presentation was titled ‘La prise en compte de la RSE dans le système de pilotage de performance des entreprises marocaines’ (The integration of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into the performance management system of Moroccan companies).

Additionally, two workshops were conducted during the conference. The first workshop, led by Dr Trevor Gerhardt, a faculty member at Unicaf University, focused on ‘How to read and get the most out of the literature review: tips and guidelines.’ The second workshop, facilitated by Dr Elena Papadopoulou, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Doctoral Studies and Research, Unicaf University, Federal, centred on ‘How to get published.’

Finally, during the Award Ceremony, the honour for the best presentation was shared by two presenters. Abel Wilson Magongo received recognition for his presentation titled ‘Comparative study of school-related resources as determinants of mathematics achievement among international baccalaureate diploma learners in South Africa and Singapore.’ George Waweru Mwangi was also acknowledged for his presentation titled ‘Relational agency, technology, and technical efficiency in Kenyan coffee farming: a stochastic production frontier approach.’
