Choosing The Best Degree For You

Some degree courses may be more suitable for you than others but you should remember that according to research, around 40% of jobs available to fresh graduates are open to those with a degree in any subject. So, if you’re not sure what you want to do when you graduate, you may well be safe studying a subject you think you will enjoy, even if it may not be the one which qualifies you for a particular career.

There are, of course, some careers such as medicine, dentistry and architecture which are almost impossible to enter without first gaining the appropriate, relevant degree qualification. If you’ve researched your career options thoroughly and are 100% sure you want to enter one of these fields there is no point applying for any other course.

These careers aside, graduate recruiters not only take into consideration your academic capabilities but also a number of other skills you can demonstrate. These include numeracy, computer literacy, critical reasoning, the ability to present written and oral reports and to work both individually and in teams. These are becoming ever more important in the selection process and can, above any degree subject, mean the difference between a successful and unsuccessful applicant, so it is important to bear this in mind.

It is also worth remembering that it is not always wise to allow current employment market conditions to dictate your choice of degree subject, as these may change considerably by the time you graduate. Instead, it is advisable to choose a subject that matches your interests and abilities or one which covers a broad spectrum of disciplines such as business. In this way, not only will you get more benefit and enjoyment from your studies, you will also find that you have more scope with your future career.
