Unicaf proudly participated in the 5th Annual Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) Annual General Meeting, held on November 21-22, 2024, at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). Under the theme “Transformative Empowerment: Breaking Barriers and Bridging Gaps for Women Educators in the 21st Century”, this event brought together women educators, leaders and stakeholders to champion progress and address challenges in women’s education.
The Honourable Harriette Chiggai, from the Office of the President’s Advisor on Women Rights, delivered a compelling keynote address on gender-based violence (GBV) as a major impediment to women’s empowerment. She called for urgent action to create safe, inclusive environments in schools and communities, urging women educators to lead these transformative efforts and serve as role models in society.
A highlight of the event was the announcement of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Unicaf and KEWOTA. The partnership highlights a shared commitment to empowering women educators through affordable, internationally recognised higher education programmes. KEWOTA CEO Brenda Opande and Harriette Chiggai visited the Unicaf booth to discuss the partnership’s potential impact, emphasising its alignment with KEWOTA’s mission to support women educators.
Winnie Rachael, Unicaf’s Country Manager (Kenya), engaged directly with KEWOTA members during the event. She highlighted Unicaf’s dedication to providing flexible, accessible and affordable higher education tailored to the needs of working educators. Ms Rachael highlighted the transformative opportunities the Unicaf-KEWOTA partnership offers, encouraging members to leverage these programmes for both personal and professional growth.
The MoU between Unicaf and KEWOTA represents a significant milestone in advancing women’s education. Key elements of the partnership include:
- Scholarships for internationally recognised degree programmes.
- Flexible, high-quality education designed for working professionals.
- Opportunities for mentorship, leadership development and academic excellence.
This collaboration reflects Unicaf’s ongoing commitment to empowering educators and fostering a new era of professional growth for women in education.
