Meet Your Student Advisers: Dominic Kamau, Nairobi Call Centre

“We do have some funny moments on the job, like when I was trying to fend off the romantic interest of an applicant, who insisted that she would not upload her documents to enable her application to be processed, unless I agreed to go out on a date with her! Don’t ask me how I handled this embarrassing situation please.”

Dominic Kamau, Student Adviser at the UNICAF Call Centre in Nairobi, Kenya

Persuasiveness, excellent computer, organizational,  verbal and written communication skills, as well as an interest in customer service are the main qualities necessary to work as a UNICAF student adviser.

We do have some funny moments on the job, like when I was trying to fend off the romantic interest of an applicant, who insisted that she would not upload her documents to enable her application to be processed, unless I agreed to go out on a date with her! Don’t ask me how I handled this embarrassing situation please.

Most applicants are not that insistent though, and when an applicant fully co-operates with the student adviser and follows the adviser’s guidance we usually have a successful result. The gratitude and happiness of applicants whom I have helped to enroll on the study programme of their choice is sometimes so overwhelming it can bring you to tears, knowing you have helped a person obtain an academic qualification that will lead them and their families to a better future.
