Unicaf University Students Explore Innovation and Entrepreneurship at mHub Malawi

Unicaf University recently led a delegation of students and staff members on a field trip to mHub Malawi, the country’s leading innovation and entrepreneurship hub, on 3rd September 2025. This visit marked the first time a university has organised a student field trip to mHub, underscoring Unicaf University’s commitment to fostering practical learning experiences and innovation-driven education.

The visit, coordinated by Unicaf University’s Student Affairs Office, began with a warm welcome from Mr. Hubert Magombo, Senior Project Officer at mHub, who provided an overview of the hub’s mission, history, and programmes. Students engaged in an interactive session, exploring mHub’s initiatives aimed at empowering youth, women, and marginalised groups through entrepreneurship, digital skills, and business incubation.

Key programmes highlighted during the visit included:

  • Zantchito Mbambande, which provides entrepreneurship coaching for technical graduates to help them establish small businesses.

  • Business Acceleration for Youth (USAID), an incubation programme supporting youth-led businesses through training, mentorship, and access to grants.

  • Children’s Champions Club, offering coding and computer literacy training for school-aged children, providing opportunities for Unicaf students to volunteer and gain practical teaching experience.

  • Girls for Code, empowering young women with digital skills.

  • Digital Skills Training, which has trained over 800 youth in coding, software development, and digital marketing since 2023.

During a Q&A session, students explored areas such as awareness and access to programmes, post-incubation support, early-stage idea development, and potential internship and volunteer opportunities at mHub. A guided tour of the facilities allowed participants to connect their academic knowledge in ICT and business administration with real-world applications in entrepreneurship and innovation.

The field trip concluded as a highly impactful experience for students, reinforcing Unicaf University’s commitment to integrating academic learning with practical exposure. Strengthening partnerships with hubs like mHub ensures that students gain the professional skills, networks, and resources necessary to succeed in their careers.
