Unicaf University Hosts Student-Led Mental Health Session

Unicaf University successfully hosted a Student-Led Mental Health Session at its Lusaka campus, bringing together students, staff, and participants from partner institutions to foster open dialogue, raise awareness, and promote practical approaches to student wellbeing.

The session addressed the growing global concern surrounding mental health challenges among university students. With increasing academic pressures, financial constraints, and evolving social expectations, the initiative aimed to provide a safe and inclusive platform for meaningful conversations and shared learning.

The event welcomed participants from Unicaf University, Lusaka Apex Medical University, and Reclaimed Lives, a student-led initiative comprising members from the University of Zambia and the University of Lusaka. The session also received distinguished attendance from Mr Mukelabai Mukelabai, Youth Policy and Development Advisor at the European Union in Zambia, further highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing student wellbeing.

Facilitated by Unicaf University students Precious Kamanga and Tumisang Makwati, the session encouraged peer-to-peer interaction and engagement, creating a relatable and supportive environment for participants to share experiences and insights. Unicaf University staff provided guidance and oversight, ensuring the session remained structured and aligned with institutional objectives.

The session aimed to promote mental wellbeing, strengthen peer engagement, and enhance collaboration between institutions. Key objectives included raising awareness of mental health challenges, equipping students with practical stress-management tools, encouraging open discussions, and fostering peer support networks.

There was strong participation and engagement with students actively contributing to discussions, questions, and sharing personal experiences, enriching the overall dialogue. The diversity of participants offered a wide range of perspectives, further strengthening the impact of the session.

Participants reported increased awareness of mental health issues and the importance of seeking support, alongside gaining practical strategies to manage stress and maintain emotional wellbeing. The event successfully created a safe and open space, reinforcing the value of peer support and collaborative learning.

The Student-Led Mental Health Session achieved its intended objectives, demonstrating the power of student-driven initiatives in addressing critical issues within higher education. By integrating student perspectives, expert contributions, and interactive engagement, the session delivered a comprehensive and impactful experience.
