Unicaf University successfully hosted a dynamic Public Speaking & Oratory Contest at the Unicaf University Amphitheatre in Lilongwe, reinforcing its commitment to holistic student development by equipping learners with essential communication, leadership, and critical thinking skills.
The initiative provided students with a practical platform to express ideas, engage audiences, and build confidence beyond the virtual classroom. Recognising that effective communication is a vital competency in today’s academic and professional landscape, the event aimed to strengthen students’ ability to articulate their thoughts clearly while fostering leadership and civic engagement.
Under the theme “Empowering Student Voice for Leadership & Civic Engagement,” the contest showcased a diverse range of perspectives and topics, including civic responsibility, innovation, cybersecurity awareness, and community transformation.
The judging panel comprised Unicaf University staff members Mr John Mtelemuka, Ms Faith Minjale, and Ms Rabeca Mvula, who evaluated participants based on content originality, delivery, structure, stage presence, and overall impact.
The programme commenced with opening remarks by Mr Limbani Mwale, who emphasised the importance of public speaking as a foundational skill for personal and professional growth. Participants were then guided through the competition structure, ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.
Following a series of engaging and thought-provoking presentations, the top three participants were recognised for their outstanding performance:
- 1st Place: Dalitso Kazembe (Business Administration)
- 2nd Place: Florine Thobela (Computer Science)
- 3rd Place: Prince Mattaka (Economics and Business BA)
Awardees received leather-bound notebooks and Unicaf-branded pens, while all participants were acknowledged for their efforts and contributions.
Beyond the competitive element, the event placed strong emphasis on learning and development. A dedicated feedback and public speaking tips session provided participants with constructive insights into their performance. Mr John Mtelemuka shared observations on overall performance trends, while MPA student Mr Victor Sibale contributed reflections on presentation delivery and engagement. Mr Limbani Mwale concluded the session with practical advice on clarity, confidence, audience engagement, and continuous improvement.
The contest had a significant positive impact on both participants and attendees. Students gained hands-on experience in public speaking, received immediate feedback, and benefited from peer learning by observing different speaking styles. The event also inspired audience members to actively engage and consider participating in future initiatives.
Speaking on behalf of the participants, Florine Thobela expressed appreciation for the opportunity, noting that the experience helped build confidence and provided valuable practical exposure. She also highlighted the importance of organising similar initiatives regularly to support continuous student development.
This successful event highlights Unicaf University’s dedication to nurturing well-rounded graduates equipped with both academic knowledge and essential soft skills. The University remains committed to creating impactful student engagement initiatives that prepare learners for leadership and success in a global environment.
