Unicaf, UNESCO, and PEN International Empower Young Writers

The Creative Writing and Research Skills workshop, jointly organised by UNESCO, PEN International, and Unicaf, concluded successfully after two days of engaging presentations, interactive sessions, and practical exercises. The event, which took place at the Goethe Institute in Nairobi with an option for virtual participation, aimed to build the capacities of up to 40 young people, primarily students from institutions of higher learning in East Africa, in the fields of creative writing and research.

The workshop addressed the need to strengthen writing and research skills demonstrated by the participants in an essay competition earlier organised by UNESCO. Through expert guidance and interactive sessions, the event sought to empower the attendees to express innovative thinking and perspectives effectively.

The Creative Writing and Research Skills workshop commenced with expert facilitator Tony Mochama from PEN International delivering a captivating presentation on creative writing techniques. Participants were exposed to storytelling, character development, and effective use of language and imagery, accompanied by examples of successful creative writing pieces. Interactive exercises further engaged the attendees, enabling them to hone their creative writing abilities.

In parallel, Professor Kithaka wa Mberia Nduko, another expert facilitator, guided the participants on research skills. Emphasising the significance of reliable sources, critical thinking, and effective information synthesis, the practical exercises enhanced the participants’ understanding of research methodologies and the process of conducting thorough research.

An exciting aspect of the workshop was the active participation of journalists from KBC Radio, Print, and TV. Their presence added value to the event, promoting the importance of intercultural dialogue and strong writing skills. This engagement facilitated a broader dissemination of the workshop’s outcomes and opened doors for potential collaborations between the participants and the media industry. By amplifying the voices of the young writers to a wider audience, the event contributed to fostering intercultural dialogue for peace and inclusion.

The success of the workshop highlights the importance of continued support for young writers in their creative writing and research endeavours. By equipping them with these essential skills, we can empower the next generation to make meaningful contributions to society.
