Nairobi, Kenya – 6th August 2025 — Unicaf has officially signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Office of the President on Women’s Rights (OPWR) to advance gender equity and promote STEM education for women and girls across Kenya.
The MoU, signed on 5 August 2025 by Harriette Chiggai, Presidential Advisor on Women’s Rights, and Unicaf’s Country Manager, Kenya, Ms Winnie Rachael, marks a historic milestone in the collaboration between the leading online higher education provider and a key government division dedicated to women’s empowerment.
This strategic partnership outlines a two-tiered approach. The first focuses on engaging the Office of the President’s staff and their families through educational initiatives, while the second targets a national STEM empowerment programme aimed at increasing participation and opportunities for women and girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
“The partnership reflects our shared commitment to using education as a catalyst for transformation, especially in areas where women and girls have historically been underrepresented,” said Harriette Chiggai. “Together, we are breaking barriers and setting a national example of collaboration and empowerment.”
Discussions held alongside the signing emphasised the importance of supporting open and digital learning platforms, addressing systemic challenges to education access, and fostering inclusive workforce development. The Office of the President has invited Unicaf to further engage with staff forums and upcoming events to deepen collaboration and visibility.
Unicaf’s Country Manager, Kenya, Winnie Rachael, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential: “This MOU reinforces our mission to democratise access to quality higher education across Africa. By working hand in hand with the Office of the President on Women’s Rights, we are positioned to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the educational landscape for women and girls in Kenya.”
In addition to the MOU signing, the parties outlined plans to pursue further partnerships with corporate sponsors and international donors, including potential collaboration with the French Embassy, to scale initiatives supporting STEM education for women.
This alliance underscores the vital role of strategic partnerships in driving national development goals, with education at the forefront of empowering future generations.
