Just like most economies, the relevance of SMEs to the Cameroonian economy is a truism. However, despite their significant role, SMEs still experience a very high failure rate in Cameroon. Nevertheless, while SMEs in Cameroon suffer a high failure rate, the inhabitants of the Western Region of Cameroon thrive considerably in their entrepreneurial activities. It is observable that inhabitants of this region seem to have strong preferences for specific industries. The logical question is: is there a significant relationship between the choice of industry and SME success in this region? Given the inexistence of empirical studies that answer this question, this study aims to determine whether or not there exist a statistical relationship between industry choice and SME success in the Region mentioned above. With a questionnaire, this study collected data from 403 SMEs across this region. The chi-squared test was used to analyze the collected data. The analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between industry choice and SME success. The research also revealed that this relationship is relatively strong, with the retailing and the service industries having a significant percentage of successful businesses. Therefore, it is recommended that potential business owners in this region target such industries as they present more significant chances of success.
