This qualitative study examined the relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Financial Performance (FP) of tobacco companies in Malawi. Despite inconsistent findings in previous research, CSR has become an important tool for firms to demonstrate their commitment to social responsibility, particularly in industries such as tobacco that have negative impacts on the environment and social well-being. The Instrumental Stakeholder Theory served as the theoretical basis for this study. The study developed the CSR/FP Link Conceptual Model to qualitatively test the link between CSR and FP for nine tobacco firms in Malawi. The researcher applied…

Findings from the field of experimental linguistics have shown that a native speaker may judge a variant that is part of her grammar as unacceptable, but still use it productively in spontaneous speech. The process of eliciting acceptability judgments from speakers of non-standard languages is sometimes clouded by factors akin to prescriptive notions of grammatical correctness. It has been argued that standardization enhances the ability to make clear-cut judgments, while non-standardization may result to grammatical hybridity, often manifested in the form of functionally equivalent variants in the repertoire of a single speaker. Recognizing the importance of working with corpora of…

This article examines the development of object clitic placement by children acquiring Cypriot Greek. Greek-speaking Cyprus is sociolinguistically characterized by diglossia between two varieties of Greek, the local Cypriot Greek and the official Standard Modern Greek. Arguably as a result of this situation, clitics may be placed postverbally (enclisis) or preverbally (proclisis) in the same syntactic environment; while the former is a property of Cypriot Greek and the latter is typically considered an effect of the standard language. The following issues are investigated here: (a) how such bilectal speakers distinguish between the two Greek varieties with respect to clitic placement;…

This paper describes the organization of farmers’ markets that the state government initiated in most of the towns and cities in Tamil Nadu, South India in 1999. Drawing on research conducted in three districts, it examines these markets’ impact on the most vulnerable stakeholder groups: on the production side, small and marginal farmers, with special attention to farming women; among traders, vegetable headload vendors; and on the consumption side, the residents of low-income neighbourhoods. With the increasing popularity of farmers’ markets in other Indian states and in many other parts of the world, important lessons can be learnt from this…
