Celebrating Kenya’s Independence day, or Jamhuri day, Unicaf offered around 30 students the chance to visit the magnificent Lake Nakuru National Park, one of Kenya’s finest nature reserves. The students and Unicaf staff escorting them set off very early in the morning from Nairobi and arrived at Nakuru just before midday. After a rich buffet lunch at the Golden palace hotel, during which they had the chance to mingle and network with fellow students, they were taken on a safari drive in the beautiful landscape of the park, best explored in the golden light of the afternoon sun. From special vantage points the Unicaf group enjoyed exquisite views of the blue waters of the lake dotted with pink flamingoes, pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers, ostriches and storks and of the park’s dense acacia woodlands, home to herds of impala, waterbuck and large pythons hanging from trees, as well as other endangered wildlife species, including the largest population of the black rhinos.
